Chukwudi Iwuji is a Nigerian-British actor who is best known for his work in movies such as Exam (2009), John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), Daniel Isn’t Real (2019), Shine Your Eyes (2020), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). He is also well-recognized for portraying characters such as Alexander Hale in the British legal drama TV series The Split (2018-2022), Dr. Eli Mays in the American political thriller drama TV series Designated Survivor (2019), and Clemson Murn in the American superhero TV series Peacemaker (2022). Besides, Chukwudi is a prolific theatre artist and has worked in numerous plays and stage productions in both the United Kingdom and the United States. He has served as an associate artist for the Royal Shakespeare Company, a renowned theatre company based in Warwickshire, England – having first performed there in 2001.

Chukwudi, between 1987 and 1993, attended the Caterham School, an independent co-educational day and boarding school in Caterham, Surrey, England.

After his high school graduation, he joined Yale University, a private Ivy League (a group of 8 private research universities in the Northeastern United States that symbolize academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism) research university in New Haven, Connecticut.

  • When Chukwudi was about 10 years old, his parents, both diplomats, joined the United Nations (the world’s largest and most well-known international intergovernmental organization), and the family moved from Nigeria to Ethiopia.
  • About 2 years later, he was sent to study in England. There, Chukwudi became the first black student in Caterham School’s history to have been elected as the ‘Head Boy’.
  • During his time at Yale University, in the mid-1990s, he joined the university’s drama society and was offered an acting scholarship after appearing in their production of Murder in the Cathedral (a drama by T. S. Eliot, one of the 20th century’s major poets).
  • In 2000, he joined a theatre training program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A few months after this, he returned to England and successfully auditioned for the Royal Shakespeare Company, a major British theatre company.
  • At the 2016 Audie Awards, he won in the ‘Literary Fiction or Classics’ category for his narration of The Fishermen (2015), the debut novel of Nigerian author Chigozie Obioma. The Audie Awards recognize achievement in spoken word, particularly audiobook narration and audio drama performance. They are presented annually in March by the APA (Audio Publishers Association), a not-for-profit trade organization of the audiobook industry in the United States.
  • In 2018, Chukwudi starred as Blanke in The Low Road (a 2013 play by the American playwright Bruce Norris) and won an Obie Award for his performance. The Obie Awards or Off-Broadway Theater Awards are annual awards originally given by The Village Voice (an American news and culture paper, known for being the country’s first alternative newsweekly) newspaper to theatre artists and groups in New York City.
